Bathing your pets in Winter

Macarthur Vet Bathing your pets in Winter 1

Winter is here!  Those chilly mornings and evenings have well and truly set in, and winter is around the corner.  So, does this mean we stop bathing our animals altogether? No! It just means we can bathe them a little less than normal.  Based on dermatology advice, dogs should generally be washed 1-2 weeks in those warmer months and 2-4 weeks over the cooler months.

There are hundred of products on the market and most are totally inappropriate! Animals with a natural healthy coat need shampoos that will clean the hair and skin without stripping the natural oils.  Avoid human shampoos, shampoos that are medicated, and eucalyptus and tea-tree oils which can irritate the skin.

What about cats? Well we all know that cats are great at grooming themselves, and that’s actually great because generally, cats aren’t big fans of baths!  BUT, we do recommend that cats be bathed occasionally.  If you can get them used to it while they are kittens – they won’t be so scared of it!

So, remember, even though the weather is getting cooler, your pets’ coat still needs looking after – if you have any questions, please give us a call.
