Dogs, News · 15 August 2020

Izzy, and her puppies this time, came back to the clinic for a health check 24 hours post birth to ensure she was ok and fit to continue looking after her puppies.   It’s good to feel her tummy and check that the uterus is contracting, and to do an internal exam of her cervix.
The puppies are all checked to rule-out any birth abnormalities, check their umbilical cords, etc.

It can be difficult to look after so many puppies, but Izzy was a great first-time Mum, right from the start.  There was one smaller puppy that needed some extra artificial warmth and help with feeding on the first night, but with good care from her owners, she bounced back very quickly.

Mastitis

29/08/20.

Izzy’s owner suspected that she may have had a bit of mastitis.  She was taken to our Bradbury clinic for a check-up on Saturday afternoon.   Fortunately, there was no major infection, and Izzy’s owner was instructed to massage the glands/teats and express the milk.  No antibiotics were needed, and she responded very quickly to excellent care from her owners.
