Annual Health Checks
Regular health checks are an important part of keeping your pet happy and healthy throughout every stage of their life.
Because our pets age much faster than we do, their health can change considerably over the course of a year. Some illnesses and health concerns can also develop gradually, with early signs that can be difficult to notice at home.
An annual health check gives our vets an opportunity to assess your pet’s overall health, identify any changes early and discuss anything you’ve noticed or are concerned about.
What happens during a health check?
Your vet will start by talking with you about how your pet has been going at home. This is a great opportunity to discuss any changes in their appetite, drinking, weight, mobility, behaviour or general wellbeing, as well as any other concerns you may have.
We’ll then perform a thorough physical examination, which generally includes checking your pet’s:
- Teeth and mouth
- Eyes
- Ears
- Skin and coat
- Feet and nails
- Lymph nodes
- Bones and joints
- Heart and lungs
- Abdomen
If we identify anything that needs further investigation, your vet will discuss the findings with you and recommend appropriate next steps.
How often should my pet have a health check?
For most healthy adult dogs and cats, we recommend a health check at least once a year.
Older pets and those living with ongoing health conditions may benefit from more frequent check-ups. Your vet can recommend how often your individual pet should be seen based on their age, health and individual needs.
Health checks and vaccinations
When your pet comes to Macarthur Vet Group for their routine vaccination, a health check is included as part of their visit.
Before administering any vaccinations, your vet will assess your pet’s general health and discuss which vaccinations are appropriate based on their age, lifestyle and individual needs.
Even if your pet isn’t due for a vaccination, regular health checks are still an important part of their ongoing preventative care.
