Is your dog scratching?

Is your dog scratching?

You are here: Home / Pet Care / Dogs / Is your dog scratching?

Dogs, Pet Care, Preventative Health Care · 7 October 2020

If you notice your dog is excessively scratching, licking or rubbing, or you can see some red patches on the skin, hair loss or bad skin odour, then it might be time to come and see us! It sounds like your dog may have a skin condition. Damaged or irritated skin can be very common in dogs, but nonetheless distressing for both you and your dog.

Typically, during this time with the change in environment, we see dogs come in with Atopic Dermatitis, which is an allergic skin disease that causes itching. The allergens that cause Atopy include pollens (from grasses, weeds and trees), dust mites and moulds. It is one of the most common skin allergies in dogs and cats, along with fleas. Atopic Dermatitis can also develop into a year-round problem (not just seasonal!)

I’s important to remember that while we see dogs with Atopic Dermatitis, other common causes are food allergies, parasites/fleas and infections. There are a variety of different treatments for skin conditions from topical shampoos, creams and lotions, antihistamines, flea control and diet. What you feed your dog plays an important role in supporting skin health.

Diet

For dogs with suspected environmental allergies and skin conditions, the Hill’s Prescription Diet Derm Defense helps reduce the reactions to the environmental allergens. Essential fatty acids help support healthy skin and a shiny coat. If it is confirmed that your dog has food allergies, then Hill’s Prescription Diet z/d and d/d are your “go to” foods as they contain the ingredients that actually minimize the risk of allergic responses. It’s extremely important to have a consultation with us so that the vet can prescribe the best treatment / food and to find out what the best approach is to introducing new food to your dog’s diet.
