Dogs, News · 14 August 2020

13/08/20

Izzy was off her food and huffing and puffing a bit, so her owner/Mum brought her back to Gregory Hills for a check-up.  Dr Peter confirmed that Izzy was in the early stages of labour, but that everything was going OK, and she would probably give birth overnight.  Most dogs give birth during the night, often meaning very little sleep for their owners – and sometimes for their vets too!

14/08/20

Izzy gave birth to 10 beautiful and healthy puppies.  (3 boys and 7 girls!).  Labour in a dog can last for up to 2 or 3 hours for the first puppy and 1 – 2 hours per puppy after that.  Once the puppy is born, the mother quickly removes the membrane and licks the puppy’s face to stimulate the breathing. Sometimes the mother might need some assistance. The litter then attaches to their mother for feeding.  Izzy did a great job, delivering all 10 puppies overnight- without the need for veterinary assistance!  Isn’t life such a precious gift!  Below you can see the most beautiful image of Izzy nursing her litter.
